Have you ever had a genuine human interaction when you least expected it? I did recently with a stranger and it made an unfortunate and stressful situation much easier.
I work from home and my computer is basically my life. My email is my only connection to my work, so when it isn’t working properly, it is kind of a big problem.
When it stopped working, I called our email provider and was fully braced for a terrible hour-long conversation about my server settings. What resulted was a two-hour long conversation with a genuine human being who didn’t make me want to poke my eyes out because of dry technical jargon.
Our conversation, while peppered lightly with the task of fixing my email also included the topic of how awesome British TV is and the most ideal remedy for kicking an office cold (its oil of oregano in case you were wondering).
About halfway through our two-hour call I realized how lovely the conversation was. And it made me realize how little we have genuine human interactions in our day-to-day lives.
Perhaps if we took a millisecond to consider our impact on those around us, we might end up having nice interactions with strangers. No one’s time is any more important than anyone else’s – no matter what consumerism & capitalism would have us believe.
Maybe it is because we are always so busy – or we think we are. We don’t tend to give people the time of day when we need something from them.We are all just humans. In the case of this conversation, we're all just humans who love Sherlock. Click To Tweet
That is what I’ve been reminded of thanks to this interaction – if you take a second to care, you’ll probably find you have something in common with a complete stranger.
Have you ever had a genuine interaction with a stranger? Did it help restore your faith in humanity?
