My shoe collection has never really been that big – but that’s all relative of course! If I could, I would survive with two pairs of shoes only – my 8-year-old Blundstones, and my off-brand Birkenstocks. These two pairs alone could cover 75% of my seasonal needs. Being Canadian, I can’t escape needing winter boots. Curse you winter! (No really, winter is the worst.)
In 2014, I played the #MinsGame with my grad school roommate and got rid of 75% of my clothes. I’ve always been a shopaholic and until 2014, I didn’t realize how much closet clutter I had accumulated. That is, until I got rid of 3/4 of it and still had more than enough left for a fully stocked and functional wardrobe.
The majority of the clothes I minimized three years ago were poorly made, cheap clothes that didn’t do anything for me.… Continue reading
I don’t want to jinx it, but I think it might actually be spring! I was worried Ontario was going to be stuck in winter forever!
Welcome to this month’s Minimized Monthly! This month I am focusing on one specific area: kitchen clutter! My kitchen clutter has always been lower on the donating totem pole because it hides in cupboards, out of sight. But it can hide no longer!
I find kitchen items hard to part with, partly because they have an inherent usefulness that other items just do not. Sure, I might have some kitchen appliances I don’t use often, but when I do, they help me make something (or so the internal monologue in my head goes).… Continue reading
I’ve been a bad minimalist lately, and I don’t care who knows it! Not in the physical ‘things’ sense, but in the mental sense. The last couple of weeks I have been very restless and impatient. Rather than just being able to enjoy my weekends and freetime, I’ve been wanting to fill them with personal productivity. Things like designing my tiny house, or exploring outside. Basically, I don’t want to sit in my house doing nothing- or doing things I see as a waste of my time (like relaxing, Netflixing, etc).
What I have failed to take into account is that it’s winter (mostly) and I live in the middle of nowhere (or at least that’s how it feels most days).… Continue reading
Happy end of February minimalist peeps! I don’t know where February went- it just flew by!
Which means its time for another Minimized Monthly! But before I get to my list of what I’ll be removing from my life this month, I want to talk about a common minimalist trap- the pressure to own as little as possible.
It is often portrayed that, if you want to be a ‘good’ minimalist, you have to own as little as possible. For people just starting out on their minimalist path, this often leads to downsizing/minimizing/purging possessions just for the sake of it.
I find myself falling into this trap quite often.… Continue reading
Happy Monday people! And welcome to my first Minimized Monthly!
I started my serious downsizing journey two-ish years ago. If you saw the amount of clothes/books/kitchen stuff I minimized, you would be shocked. I’m shocked when I think about how much ‘stuff’ I used to fill my life with.
The curious thing about simplifying and minimizing is that, if you don’t stay on top of it, things can start to creep back into your life. Not to the same point where I was before, but enough for me to want to recommit with fervor!
As a way to keep myself accountable on my simplifying journey, with the added benefit of actually minimizing what I own, every month I will share the items that I plan on donating, selling or re-purposing.… Continue reading
